The theme of the feeding of 5,000 people (John 6: 1-15) was “visible bread” (reference https://canaan.blog/the-feeding-of-the-5000) , but after John 6:16, the theme is “invisible bread” (reference https://canaan.blog/the-bread-of-life/ ).
Jesus said. ” I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, they will live forever. ” (John 6:51) Jesus said of himself, ” I am the bread that came down from heaven. ” (John6:41)
People who heard it felt uncomfortable. Because they knew Jesus. Some may have known about his childhood. “Why does he say that he came down from heaven, his father was Joseph and his mother was Mary? He certainly belongs to this earth, not to heaven. Did he get crazy? “They thought.
In response, Jesus said, “Stop muttering to each other,” ” I am the bread of life. ” (John 6:48) “Your ancestors ate manna (bread) in the wilderness, but died.” (John 6:49). “But I am not. I am the bread that came down from heaven and a man will not die if he eat it. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Everyone eats this bread. Then they will live forever. ”(Verses 50, 51).
Jesus is the bread of life. Eternal life is given to those who believe. This ground bread does not last long. It will eventually rot. Eating this bread on the ground will make our bodies feel better, but after a while we will be hungry again. If we keep eating, we will not be able to live forever. But there is bread that came down from heaven. There is a person who came down from heaven. Anyone can live forever if they eat the bread. This bread refers to Jesus Christ himself.
Jesus said. ” People do not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of God’s mouth ” (Matthew 4: 4)
If we don’t eat food, we won’t know the taste. I carry vegetables and fruits produced by myself and other farmers directly, and it’s easy to explain what I’ve eaten, but even if I know what I’ve never eaten. Even if I search online and read the explanation, or if I hear the explanation of the taste from the farmer, I still find it difficult to explain to other people what I have not actually eaten. I think Jesus, the bread of life, has a similar point. We can’t understand the taste unless we eat it. I think there is an area where we cannot realize the splendor of Jesus until we believe it.
Of course, it is important to understand with our head. There is a bakery next to the direct sales space. I like bread so I bought it once a week. There are various types of bread in the bakery, and explanations and introductory texts are written. It will be helpful. But in the end, we can’t tell unless we buy and eat. One day, I saw chikuwa mentaiko bread it looks a little bit strange, and I bought it with the intention of trying something strange that I don’t usually eat, but it was very delicious. If we take the plunge and believe in Jesus, the bread of life, we will be amazed at how delicious it is. Let us taste Jesus further. Jesus is the bread of life. Highly recommended bread.
During the early Christian era, Christians were misunderstood and despised and criticized as barbarians who ate human flesh and drank human blood. But that was a misunderstanding and what they were actually doing was the sacrament.
As with anything, unless we take it inside, it will always be external and outside. For example, read Shakespeare in a play. If you are an actor, read the script. They try to get inside. It is said that they read until it becomes their own blood and flesh, but if they leave it on their desk or bookshelf, it will not come inside even if they read it only once. They can take it out of the bookshelf, read it over and over again, read it aloud, or think of the scene and meditate on it. So is the Word of God. In order for us to experience the splendor and life of the Bible, the Word of God, it is important to incorporate it within ourselves.
The same is true for Jesus himself. If we stay with the past figures in the Bible, it’s external. But if Jesus comes inside our hearts, things like life, joy, and dynamism will be taken inside. Jesus, who is still alive, becomes a part of our heart and life. I think that’s what it means to drink Jesus’ blood and eat Jesus’ body.
The milk that the suckling child drinks is made from the meat and blood of the mother. The same is true for the foetation. It absorbs nutrients from the mother and grows larger. So are the branches. It receives meat and blood from the tree, that is, the nutrients that flow, and bears fruit.
The food we eat every day nourishes us and feeds us. It becomes blood and flesh for our body. If we eat the blood and flesh of Jesus (Jesus Himself), if we invite him inside, and if we eat the words of the Bible, which is the food of the spirit, if we take it inside, it gradually becomes us. It becomes flesh and blood. Because it is the bread of life, it brings us life. That life is the one that overcomes death.
Some of the disciples muttered (John 6:60). Some left Jesus (John 6:66). Their ancestors made similar tweets to Moses and to God. “We got tired of this miserable food” (Numbers 21: 5). A long time ago, the Israelites were tired of the manna (bread) that God had prepared in the wilderness, even though they were rescued from slavery in Egypt, and muttered, “We want to go back to Egypt, we want to eat meat.” This is the same today. There may be various reasons for stumbling, but so many people move away from Jesus.
It can stumble upon us. I think each has different reasons, but there are always dangers. “Why does this happen to me? Why can’t God hear my prayers?” Jesus asks his aides, 12 disciples, as some of his disciples move away. “Do you stumble because of this?” (John 6:61) You were asked if you would stumble as well as they did. This question is also addressed to us. It’s a turbulent era. We don’t know what will happen in our society around us in the future.
There are three main types of reactions to Jesus at any given time. ① A person who leaves Jesus. Many disciples did. They are people who once followed Jesus and walked together, but then left on the way. ② A person who betrays Jesus and follows the devil. Twelve Judas sold his soul to the devil and betrayed Jesus, despite the amazing privilege of being chosen as a disciple (John 6:71). Those who were misled by the devil in their later years, even though they were used by Jesus. ③ A person who continues to obey Jesus. They make many mistakes, but each time they repent and continue to obey Jesus. That was Peter. He said. ” Lord, to whom do we go? You have the word of eternal life. ” (John 6:68) We want to be like Peter.
Jesus is the “bread of life” that came down from heaven. Jesus fills the realm of the heart that cannot be filled with this earthly bread. Not only that, it gives us eternal life to overcome death.
