Adam and Eve, who disobeyed God and lost the temptation of the devil and sinned, hid from God. God called, “Where are you?” Adam answers. It is written in the Bible like this.
10 He replied. “I heard your voice in the garden, so I was afraid to hide because I was naked.” 11 Then he said. “Who taught you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I told you not to eat?” 12 He said. “I ate because this woman you put by me took it from that tree and gave it to me.” 13 Then the Lord God said to her. “What on earth did you do?” The woman replied. “The snake misled me, and that’s why I ate.” (Genesis 3: 10-13)
When asked by God, ” Where are you? ” (Genesis 3: 9), Adam replied, “I am naked, so I was afraid to hide” (verse 10). Then God pointed out Adam’s sin, saying, “Did you eat from the tree that I had commanded not to eat?” (Verse 11).
Adam replied, “I ate because this woman you put by me took it from that tree and gave it to me,” (verse 12), blaming Eve. He passed on the responsibility. This is exactly the nature of human beings. I think that is the same for us living in the present age. Adam used to be happy to refer to Eve as ” bones from my bones, flesh from my flesh ” (Genesis 2:23) . But he says “this woman” here. The sense of unity that once existed has been lost. Adam blames Eve for her sins, but more specifically, because he says, “You put this woman by my side” (verse 12) as my helper. He also blame God. It is a double responsibility transfer. We humans have the property that we do not want to admit our sins. And soon we blames others and tries to justify ourselves. In that sense, humans have not grown at all since ancient times. No matter how much science and technology develops, the nature of human beings has not changed at all. People used to and still need God’s help and salvation.
Then God pointed out Eve’s sin, “What on earth did you do?” And Eve did not admit her sin, saying, “The snake misled me. So I ate. ”(Verse 13) and blamed the snake, the devil.
I think God pointed out the sins of Adam and Eve because he wanted Adam and Eve to repent. However, both of them did not plead guilty and passed on the responsibility. If they had repented at this time, I wonder what the world would have been like after that. This issue has a lot to do with us. That message of repentance is also directed at us. If we respond to that message, we will get good results and things will be restored.
The message of the beginning of Jesus’ ministry was ” Repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). John the Baptist said. ” Bring the fruit worthy of repentance ” (Luke 3: 7). We want to be the ones who admit our sins and bear the fruit of repentance.
